MURFC games Saturday 4 July

A more pleasing set of results last week with 3 wins from 5. The Colts had a big win over arch rivals Northern - the team we beat in the grand final last year.

Thank you to Macca for stepping in to for first grade manager for the week and I would like to welcome Ian Jones (no not the Kamo Kid!) who has agreed to be the Uni Blues Manager for the remainder of 2009. We are still looking for a manager to work with Stan so please forward any ideas to Macca or I.

Due to many helpers we also managed to pack-up the ground in record time last Saturday.

Games for Saturday 4 July are as follows.

Away vs Southern Districts/Cerberus
Cerberus RUFC - HMAS Cerberus, Westernport. M194 H4
12pm Premier 3 v Cerberus
1.30pm Premier 2 v Southern Districts
3.10pm Premier 1 v Southern Districts

2nd Division at home
3.00pm Melbourne University Blues v Geelong

Our regular ground set-up and canteen have a week off so Blues players will have to set up the ground.

The Colts competition is on hold for 2 weeks due to mid-term break for tertiary institutions.

I will be at training on Thursday. Any issues please call.

Kind regards,
Simon Davis

Black and blue and the blue and gold

On Saturday 6th June Melbourne University Rugby Football Club hosted SUFC on the Main Oval of the Melbourne campus, where SUFC defeated MURFC 27-10.

This match celebrated 100 years since the foundation of MURFC, and the first match played between SUFC & MURFC back in July 1909.
SUFC took the honours in a 5 tries to 2 victory that was played in a spirit that reflected the historic occasion.

The match started with SUFC opening the scoring after 5 mins from a driving maul off a lineout. David Haydon touching down at the back of the maul.

After the opening try, the contest between the two teams turn into an arm wrestle, as MURFC were able to control their own possession well and take some yards off SUFC’s defence through well executed pick and drives.

MURFC more than matched the visitor for position but excellent pace and skills were show by the SUFC backs who played an expansive game from good field position. MURFC try scorers were No.15 Ryan Carmichael and No.2 Christian Brown.

After the match all players attended the Centenary Dinner at University House. All attendees were able to enjoy a meal and a drink with their teammates, as well as the panel discussion by rugby legends such as Brendan Nasser, Geoff Vaughan and Peter Crittle. Post-function socialising went well into Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Round 6 Report

With 3 wins from 3 games at 3pm on Saturday 23 May, it was shaping up to be another stellar week for the club. Thirds, Seconds and Colts all grounded out good wins against arch rivals Melbourne.

However it was not to be with a disappointing display by the Premier 1 side allowing Melbourne its first win for the season and our 2nd division side was outclassed by a very strong Endeavour Hills A side. Overall though it was a good day for the club with a large crowd in attendance, a professionally managed day and a lot of positive feedback from Melbourne RUFC on how we presented them with a gift for its centenary and the way we hosted them on the day with the after match function etc
