Vale: Ken Alexander

Ken Alexander, a leading player with the Club in 1958, ’59 and ’60, died from a heart attack in Sydney last Sunday (6/6/2010).

Ken came to Melbourne University from Wales where he had been a Welsh schoolboy international and was a one of the key players in the Club’s rise to dominate  the VRU competition over that period. As was often the custom in those days, on leaving the University he transferred to the Melbourne RUFC, and continued playing with that club for a number of years.

He was a regular Victorian representative throughout his playing career mainly in the back row starting in 1958. He played against the British Isles on 23 May 1959, Victoria being defeated 53/18, and continued to play for Victoria throughout 1959, 1960 and in 1961 played in the Victorian team against Fiji. He played in the Victorian team that on 10 May 1961 defeated Queensland 14/9 at Manly Oval and then played NSW the following week.

His grandson plays prop forward in the Scotch College Under 14 Team.
