Round 6 Report

With 3 wins from 3 games at 3pm on Saturday 23 May, it was shaping up to be another stellar week for the club. Thirds, Seconds and Colts all grounded out good wins against arch rivals Melbourne.

However it was not to be with a disappointing display by the Premier 1 side allowing Melbourne its first win for the season and our 2nd division side was outclassed by a very strong Endeavour Hills A side. Overall though it was a good day for the club with a large crowd in attendance, a professionally managed day and a lot of positive feedback from Melbourne RUFC on how we presented them with a gift for its centenary and the way we hosted them on the day with the after match function etc

Colts win Minor Premiership

Last Saturday the Colts fought back from 12-7 down, playing in to a strong wind for the second half to win 34-12 against a very strong Northern side. The side played some very exciting, structured rugby and we are the only club to beat Northern this year.

A special note of appreciation to the coaching team of Barry O’Neill (now back in Ireland), Matt Beissel, James Cavanagh, Andrew McPhillips and managers Francois Joubert/Steve Griffin. However, the team recognises there is still a lot of work to do to go one step further this year!

This week (26 July) they play in the Semi-Finals which shall be as follows:

  • 1:30pm SF 1 – Moorabbin v Harlequin at Moorabbin
  • 1:30pm SF 2 – Melbourne Uni v Northern at Melbourne University (winner goes straight into the Grand Final)

Colts win Premiership

On Saturday, the MURFC Colts took out the Grand Final for 2008, adding to their Minor Premiership Shield. A sensational Double!

The match was a fitting result for their dominant season, and the third time in 4 weeks they had competed against the number 2 side, Northern Panthers.

Final Score: 29 to 12, with 5 tries and two conversions.

A formal presentation of the trophies and team will take place at our final Supporters Lunch, on Sat 30th August, at Royal Park, before our Lions take on last year’s Bundaberg Cup winners – Westgate Power.

This is the first Colts Premiership since 1987, and a great tribute to the players, coaches and support staff in our 100th Year. Come and join the celebrations!

Qualifying Final Wins

In a super day of rugby, the club recorded wins in ALL grades. Great sideline support and enthusiasm lifted the teams to defeat their Top of the Ladder oppositions.

First Grade defeated Powerhouse 26-24 in a fierce contest, showing the resilience and composure to defeat last year’s Premiers for the second time this season.

Second Grade combined well to defeat Box Hill 13-5 showing the determination needed to secure their Semi-Final berth in windswept conditions at Albert Park.

Third Grade enjoyed a forfeit win in their second division final.

Colts played at home and defeated Harlequins 24-12 as they drive toward First Place on the Colts ladder, with 3 rounds to go.
